In our family of three, one of our greatest shared joys is reading the imaginative and hilarious childrenâs books written and illustrated by Mo Willems. Our 5-year-old daughter adores everything sheâs read by him, especially his series featuring Gerald the Elephant and Piggie. But her hands-down favorite is âI Really Like Slop!â

Discovering New Childrenâs Books Together
One day, we were at our local Barnes and Noble, and our little one wanted to read to me âI Really Like Slop.â I was like, I donât know where that book could be. With a look of exasperation, she said, âDad, we are in the Mo Willemsâs section. We just need to FIND it.â I have no problem admitting I had no idea who Mo Willems was at the time.
She proceeded to read me the story. She not only read it, but she acted it. Luckily, we werenât where people were studying or working (not that that should matter in a bookstore) because she can be pretty dramatic. We both laughed and laughed while she read it.
This book is perfect for young readers looking for a funny and heartwarming story that will make them giggle and think. And if youâre a parent, youâll appreciate the valuable lessons about embracing differences and being confident in your opinions.
The expressive illustrations add to the hilarity as Piggie jumps for joy after trying the slop and proclaiming her love for the less-than-appetizing entrĂ©e. The slopâs gray-blue color scheme perfectly translates the foodâs bleakness, making Piggieâs excitement even more humorous.
Beyond the silly premise, the book also sends a wonderful message about embracing differences and not being afraid to love things that others may dismiss or criticize. Our family loves how Mo Willemsâ stories get our little one excited about reading and encourage them to think independently.
Why Mo Willemsâ Books Are a Must-Read
For parents looking for read-aloud childrenâs books that will make their kids giggle AND think, you really canât go wrong with the wacky worlds created by Mo Willems. The humor is universal across ages but never too mature or complicated for young readers to understand. I love his Pigeon books and never say no to reading them.
Overall, Mo Willemsâ books â get our highest recommendation for bringing families together through imagination and laughter. So, if youâre looking for a new book to add to your familyâs collection, try âI Really Like Slopâ and discover the joy of Mo Willemsâ imaginative stories.
