These are just my thoughts for when the Star Wars Episode IX Title and trailer should be released. Now when I want them to be released. If we were going by want, it would have been six months ago.
It’s way too early for anything but a teaser right now. The film is not even in post-production yet.
Also, I’m a Saints fan. Don’t make we watch that asterisk game just to watch a trailer…because I will. I won’t want to, but I will.
However, if you want to play John Williams’ glorious music for 15 seconds during an ad that just informs us of the title, I’m all for it.
I still am not watching that Super Bowl*.
Of course, I would love for it to be at Celebration. It’s would be a special treat for Star Wars fans.
Well, a certain type of fan.
It will be a treat for the fan who can afford to go Chicago. This is a treat for the hardcore fan. This is not a criticism as I put myself in the hardcore fan who can afford to go!
I would do a teaser here but not a full trailer.
Yes, I’m a hardcore Star Wars fan. However, a lot of people that will go to the movie don’t read the comics or the books. They only watch the movies. This makes premiering it at Celebration awkward if you are trying to reach the widest audience possible.
So what do you do if you want the first trailer to reach the widest audience?
You find the widest captive audience you can find. And this year, outside of the SuperBowl*, it will be Avengers: Endgame.
I teach high school. If I were to poll these young people – who still go to the movies – Endgame is the must see film.
I know this anathema to some. The idea that Star Wars is second fiddle to any other property is hard for some people to grasp. In fact, there is a certain subset of fandom that will decry that this is an example Disney ruining Star Wars.
No, it isn’t. Every movie should be attempting to reach the widest fan-base. Especially films in the Star Wars franchise. Talking to my students, a surprising number have not seen a Star Wars film. They don’t understand the appeal.
Make a killer trailer, and they will show up in December.
Star Wars doesn’t need help. It provides the help for others.
I would release it on May 24, 2019. I know it’s a day before the actual date it should be on (A New Hope’s release date), but this would be close enough for symmetry.
Plus, Avengers would be out for a month so you are not competing within company (which I still think was the biggest flaw for Solo).
And, it would give a boost to Aladdin, because regardless of what we want and think, Disney does own Star Wars. Synergy is good for them.
I remember going see Robots because it had a Revenge of the Sith trailer. Whole families would go see Aladdin including family members that wouldn’t normally go.
Or they would buy a ticket at least.
*The NFL fined the player for the hit but didn’t give him a penalty. To us Saints fans, this game is illegitimate.
What do you think? When do you think they should release the title and a trailer to gain the maximum impact? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
