Our Little Daisy: Joining the Girl Scouts

The Beginning: Joining the Girl Scouts

We’ve always been passionate about sharing our love for all things geeky, and now we’re delighted to add another dimension to our story. Our little one is blooming into a Daisy, the youngest level of Girl Scouts, fostering bonds, learning, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Our journey into the world of Girl Scouts began with a family connection. Our niece, who lived with us for a short while as her dad battled brain cancer, is a Girl Scout in Florida. This link provided the perfect opportunity for our little one to foster a unique bond with her cousin and simultaneously explore the enriching world of Girl Scouts.

Adventures in Florida: Zoo World and Ice Cream Socials

In her Florida troop, she’s already had a taste of what being a Girl Scout entails not long after joining the Girl Scouts. A trip to Zoo World opened her eyes to the animal kingdom in a new way, while an ice cream social in Panama City Beach served up sweet memories and camaraderie.

Engaging with Science: Dream Lab in Gonzales

Back home in Louisiana, our little Daisy has been busy! She attended the grand opening of the Dream Lab in Gonzales, where she got to record a podcast and learned how to make a light work using a battery and some playdough—an exciting science adventure for our little one. And of course, we bought a lot of Girls Scout swag, because she has to represent!

Exploring New Horizons: Fontainebleau State Park and SUNO

The fun didn’t stop there. At an event at the Fontainebleau State Park, she tried her hand at archery, looked at Saturn through a telescope, and created art. Another Girl Scout event at the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) brought more learning experiences. She took part in a debate, brushed a horse, learned about gravity from a NASA exhibit (and if you know our girl, she loves everything space!), and gained insight into everyday radiation from an Entergy exhibit. After both events, our little one passed out in the car, a sure sign that she had fun!

Building Bonds: Our Real Reason for Joining the Girl Scouts

Throughout these experiences, the most important achievement was making new friends. Being part of a community and forging connections is a fundamental part of being a Girl Scout, and we’re thrilled to see her flourishing. Our little one is a social butterfly who generally likes to meet new people. This is in stark contrast to her introverted parents. Girls Scouts allow her to have the social time she craves while fostering mom and dad’s need for it to be based on a structure to come out of our shells.

Plus, joining the Girl Scouts is about service. It’s about helping others and doing good for her community. As teachers, the students that we see in Girl Scouts and similar organizations have a profound influence on the success of our students. These students are ready to handle the commitments that growing older brings. And let’s be honest, it looks great on college admissions. Now, we are a long way off from worrying about that, but as high school teachers, this is something we naturally think about.

Our Little Daisy’s Journey Continues

Our little Daisy is thriving in her Girl Scout journey, and we can’t help but beam with pride. As her parents, our hearts swell with joy seeing her embrace these experiences and opportunities. We should have our own local troop up and running soon. We’re excited to see our little Daisy’s journey unfold, and we can’t wait to share more of her Girl Scout adventures with you!
