Animal Kingdom ended up being one of the most pleasant surprises of our trip.
We expected a quieter park day, but it turned into one of the most memorable. The whole park felt more layered and easier to enjoy with kids. There was less pressure to constantly chase the next big thing, and more room for those little moments that make a family Disney day feel special.
We arrived later in the morning and met our extended family in Harambe for Tusker House. That meal was one of the highlights of the trip. The timing worked perfectly, the character interactions were great, and the setting immediately pulled everyone into the mood of the park.
Even before we sat down, the kids were dancing to the live music in Harambe. That moment set the tone for the whole day. Animal Kingdom just felt easier to sink into.
As the day went on, we hit a strong mix of experiences. Festival of the Lion King was as impressive as ever, part of the family enjoyed Kilimanjaro Safaris in light rain, and we even handled a real-life vacation problem by buying more comfortable shoes before sore feet ruined the rest of the trip.
That flexibility mattered. Animal Kingdom gave us room to adjust without making the day feel derailed.
Later, our child bravely rode DINOSAUR, then admitted afterward she had kept her eyes closed the entire time. That instantly became one of the funniest family memories of the trip.

But for younger kids and family members who are not interested in thrill rides, it felt like a park where the best experiences were more limited.
We started in Toy Story Land, where Toy Story Mania was one of the easiest wins of the day for our group. Our child especially loved riding it with her nanny, and it was one of those rare attractions that felt equally fun for kids and adults.
Our little one still was not ready for Slinky Dog Dash, and Alien Swirling Saucers was cute but not a major highlight. That pretty much set the tone for how Hollywood Studios worked for us: when something matched our child’s age and comfort level, it was fun, but there were simply fewer all-ages hits than we found at Animal Kingdom.
Later, my mom, my little one, and I went to the Frozen Sing-Along, while other family members used Lightning Lanes in Galaxy’s Edge. We had done Rise of the Resistance on a previous trip when our child was five, and while we loved it, it was too intense for her. She remembered being scared and had no interest in trying it again.
That was really our biggest issue with Galaxy’s Edge. It is incredibly immersive and visually impressive, but for younger kids or anyone avoiding thrill rides, there is not much to do beyond wandering, shopping, snacking, and meeting characters.

If we did it again, we might skip the second EPCOT day and build in a resort day instead. We’ve learned that slower Disney trips usually work better for our family.
Did you use Lightning Lane?
Out of the Lightning Lanes at DHS and Animal Kingdom, the only two our daughter expressed interest in were Midway Mania and Na’vi River Journey. For us, that wasn’t worth it. However, my sister bought it, so my little one did Mania with her, and we just waited out the River Journey. Until all three of our family members want to ride the big rides, Lightning Lanes aren’t worth it for us.
What advice would you give someone visiting these two parks midweek?
Midweek visits tend to be less crowded, which makes it easier to move around and explore without feeling rushed. It’s a good time to enjoy the parks at your own pace. However, if it were just my small family, I would have changed the order and done Animal Kingdom on Monday and Magic Kingdom on Wednesday. Most people start their Disney vacation on Monday, and most start at Magic Kingdom.
