A Blogger Dealing with Writer’s Block

Ugh. Writer’s block.

I’m a blogger dealing with writer’s block for nearly three months. I want to write for the blog, I just can’t think of anything to write.

It’s not about topics; I have a bunch listed on Trello. In fact, I have an interview with cosplayer, Jen Eyre, coming up. It’s about opening up Grammarly and writing a rough draft. It’s the words.

Part of it is being a teacher. Summer’s have no structure outside of keeping the Nola Nerd Baby alive. We ate when she was hungry, and we slept when she slept.

This pattern was especially true when the wife was in Korea. After I would put her to bed and clean up the mess that results from having a toddler, I was just flat out exhausted. I could barely watch a movie much less write words. While she was awake, well, she wouldn’t let me. Plus, why would I write when I could play.

Focus on the Day Job

As June and July faded into memory, August signaled the beginning of school. We literally started on the first day of August.

Last year, after dealing with a ton of health issues, I approached this school year intending to have my best year. This meant a lot of planning, but also a lot of personal, professional development. I started following my teacher twitter account again. (I keep that one separate from @nolanerdcouple, but you can follow me @teacher_kurt).

Besides, after school started, teacher tiredness played a role in my writer’s block. At school, I work every single minute. At home, when the baby is awake, my time is dedicated to her and unwinding. By the time I could write, I didn’t have interest in doing it.

Well, I just wrote a lot about not writing.

That’s the thing. Sometimes you just have to write. It doesn’t matter if it is good or not.

I’ve never been really good at most creative things. Writing is one of the things I enjoy doing even though I’m not as good as I would love to be.

I have to remind myself to keep writing. I’m happier when I do so. And that should be reason enough to deal with writer’s block.
