Back to the Future: The Musical in New Orleans

We have always loved the Back to the Future movies. They are clever, funny, and filled with that mix of heart and adventure that still works decades later. When we heard Back to the Future: The Musical in New Orleans was coming to the Saenger Theatre this December, we knew we would be there.

The Saenger Theatre is more than just another venue in the city. From the ornate ceilings that look like the night sky to the warm glow when the lights fade, the Saenger makes any story feel like it belongs here.

A DeLorean Sighting

A few days before Thanksgiving, we stopped by Lakeside Mall and noticed a Back to the Future DeLorean replica on display. The silver finish, the lights, and the details were spot on. People of every age were stopping to take pictures. Some quoted lines from the movie, while others just stood quietly, smiling. We were there until after the mall closed, and one of the store’s staff came to see the car. They all looked like adults walking toward the car, but they turned into kids when they got near it.

It reminded us how deeply Back to the Future connects across generations. Whether you grew up watching Marty and Doc or are discovering them for the first time, there is something timeless about it. Seeing that car up close felt like a small preview of what is on the way to the Saenger stage.

There was even someone who knew something about extraordinary travel who was excited about the Delorean!

Our little one loved looking at it. She asked questions like What does it have a date on the console? She hasn’t seen the movie yet, but she knows it is something special. Part of that is that she was very observant of how others looked at and how I looked at it. I was 11 when it came out, the target audience for the movie. It was one that we bought on VHS as well.

Last year, the stars of Back to the Future were at Fan Expo New Orleans 2025. Seeing adults so excited to meet these actors reminds me of how much this story has touched people.

Getting Ready for the Show

The musical keeps the same story fans know, but adds songs from composer Alan Silvestri and lyricist Glen Ballard. Reviews from London and Broadway mention big laughs, great effects, and an energetic score that fits right into the story. The DeLorean even makes an appearance on stage.

Back to the Future: The Musical in New Orleans runs at the Saenger Theatre from December 9 to 14, 2025. Tickets are available through Broadway in New Orleans. We are excited to see how the production brings Hill Valley and its time-travel moments to life in our city’s most historic theater.

The Perfect Home for Broadway in New Orleans

The Saenger Theatre has been the home for Broadway touring shows in New Orleans for years. It is the kind of space that makes you want to dress up a little, grab dinner downtown, and enjoy being part of a big audience again. Everything about the building feels cinematic, making it the perfect setting for a story like Back to the Future.

From concerts to movie showings to plays, every time we walk inside, it feels like stepping into another world. That combination of history, creativity, and community is one of the reasons we love living here. (Fun fact: before we met each other, the Nola Nerd Couple were both at a showing of A Streetcar Named Desire there.)

Looking Ahead

We are counting down to opening night and looking forward to seeing how the lightning, time circuits, and classic moments play out live. There is something special about seeing a familiar story reimagined for the stage, especially in a theater that means so much to the city.

Back to the Future: The Musical in New Orleans feels like the right mix of nostalgia and New Orleans flair. No need for a flux capacitor to enjoy this kind of time travel just a night out at the Saenger.
