Editor’s Note: This is a classic recipe at its core, but we like to write it with nerdy references to turn cooking and eating into a fun family project.
Today, we are cooking chicken and biscuits with a Lord of the Rings flair!
Today, We Cook Like Hobbits!
Greetings, travelers of Middle-earth! Today, we’re embarking on a culinary quest to create a meal worthy of the Shire: Chicken and Biscuits with a Lord of the Rings flair! This comforting dish is perfect for feeding your Fellowship, whether you’re prepping for second breakfast, elevenses, or just a hearty dinner after a long journey across the Misty Mountains.
Cooking this recipe is as much an adventure as eating it—simple enough for novice cooks but customizable for those who want to channel their inner Samwise Gamgee. And the best part? Both the chicken and biscuits bake at the same temperature, leaving you plenty of time to swap riddles, sing songs, or debate whether Frodo or Sam is the true hero of the story.
So gather your ingredients, don your apron like armor, and prepare to feast like a Hobbit (with plenty of room for seconds and thirds). And remember: if you’re settling in for the extended editions of the trilogy after this meal, you might want to double the recipe—because one does not simply snack through a marathon!
Let’s get cooking, friends—there’s no need to wait for Gandalf to tell us when!
For the Chicken (adapted from Eating Well):
Biscuits: “A Tale of Fluffy Biscuits”
Ingredients
- 2–5 tbsp Butter, unsalted Cold; more for flaky, buttery biscuits worthy of Rivendell. (Feel free to use salted, but adjust that amount of salt you will use if any)
- 2 cups All-purpose flour The foundation of all baked goods, even in Hobbiton.
- 1 tsp Salt Enhances the flavor—salt from the Mines of Moria works best, but inspect your shipment first. Stories of ancient dark terrors exist in those mines.
- 4 tsp Baking powder The magic that makes them fluffy.
- 3/4 cup Milk Or cream if you’re feeling indulgent, like a Dwarf at a feast.
Instructions
- Preheat the ovenSet your oven to 450°F as they do in in the kitchens of Minas Tirith.
- Prepare the doughBreak 2–5 tablespoons of cold butter into small chunks and place in a food processor.Add 2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 4 teaspoons of baking powder.Pulse the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. (If you don’t have a food processor, use a mixing bowl and blend the butter into the flour with a fork like a Hobbit baker would.)
- Add the milkGradually pour in 3/4 cup of milk while pulsing the food processor (or stirring by hand). Stop once the dough just comes together—it should be soft and slightly sticky.
- Shape the biscuitsTurn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently a few times—don’t overdo it, or your biscuits will end up denser than Mirkwood.Shape the dough into a thick rectangle and cut it into biscuits using a round cutter, jar lid, or simply your hands for a rustic, Hobbit-style look.
- Bake the biscuitsPlace the biscuits on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the tops are golden and fluffy like a Hobbit’s hair on a sunny morning in the Shire.
- Serve warmAllow the biscuits to cool for a few minutes before serving. They’re best enjoyed warm, especially when paired with honey butter (recipe below).
Pro Tips for Biscuits in Middle-earth
- Freeze the dough: Shape the biscuits, then freeze them on a tray and store them in a freezer bag. Bake directly from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to the cook time. Perfect for unexpected wizard visits!
- Make it savory: Add shredded cheese, dried herbs, or even a pinch of garlic powder to the dough. Dwarves would definitely approve.
- Double the batch: Hobbits and humans alike will always want more biscuits.
Honey Butter: The Sidekick Every Biscuit Deserves
| Amount | Unit | Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | tbsp | Butter | Softened. |
| 2 | tbsp | Honey | Sweet as a Hobbit’s heart. |
Instructions:
- Mix softened butter and honey in a small bowl.
- Stir until smooth and creamy.
- Spread generously on warm biscuits.
Geeky Reasons to Love This Recipe
Freezer-Friendly: Double the biscuit recipe and freeze half. Future you will thank you during a late-night gaming session.
Time-Saving Combo: Both chicken and biscuits bake at the same temperature, so you can spend less time cooking and more time debating whether Picard or Kirk is the better captain.
Customizable Loadout: Want spicier chicken? Add more cayenne. Like fluffier biscuits? Use a pinch of baking soda. This recipe is like a skill tree—customize it to your advantage.
Final Thoughts
This lunch or dinner meal is perfect for a feast in the Shire, a banquet in Minas Tirith, or even a quick bite before embarking on your next quest. So gather your Fellowship (or family), pull out your baking sheets, and enjoy a meal that would make even the most reluctant adventurer say, “What about second breakfast?”
And if you are asking yourself should you watch the extended edition of Lord of the Rings after this? Yes, you should but you should probably double or quadruple the recipe!

I tried this recipe and unfortunalty there seems to be a typo on the amount of Baking Powder in this recipe. There was a really strong taste of baking powder in the biscuits when they were finished. I followed the recipe exactly as you stated but I think you meant to say 4 Teaspoons of baking powder instead of 4 Tablespoons!
Nice catch! Definitely a typo, very sorry about that.
Made the biscuits tonight to go with baked macaroni. They are delicious! I will try it with chicken another day (we’re out of chicken!)
I found a similar recipe in Fast Food Fix that was supposed to be a replication of Chickfila. I like yours because the biscuits don’t have buttermilk (which is tasty, but I don’t always have on hand). I will try this soon!
