Star Wars Celebration is the ultimate event for fans of the galaxy far, far away. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned attendee, preparing for Star Wars Celebration is essential to making the most of your experience. From meeting your favorite stars to attending panels and snagging exclusive merchandise, there’s so much to do—and only a limited amount of time to do it.
Star Wars Celebration is one of the biggest fan events in the world. Oftentimes, Celebration sells out. It is also expensive, so we feel it’s essential to help you make the most of your trip.
Over the years, my experience attending conventions like Star Wars Celebration has taught me that preparation is the key to success. Here are five essential tips for preparing for Star Wars Celebration that will help you have an unforgettable time
1. Don’t Try to Do Everything
Star Wars Celebration is packed with exciting events—panels, autograph sessions, photo ops, cosplay meetups, and exclusive merchandise drops. But here’s the truth: you won’t be able to do it all. And that’s okay!

How to prioritize:
- Decide what’s most important to you. Are you a collector? Spend time hunting for rare merchandise. Love celebrity interactions? Focus on autograph sessions and photo ops.
- Use the event schedule (usually available on the Celebration app or website) to plan your day. Highlight your must-see events and leave room for flexibility.
- Accept that some things might overlap. If you miss something, there’s always the next Celebration or other conventions, such as Fan Expo or Pensacon, which may feature some of these guests and authors.
Remember, just like visiting a major city, you have to pick and choose what to see. When we went to London, I knew I couldn’t see every landmark, so I picked my priorities. The same applies here—choose your must-dos and let go of the rest.
2. Be Flexible and Veer From Your Itinerary
While planning is crucial, some of the best moments at Star Wars Celebration happen unexpectedly.
For example, during the 2012 Celebration, my wife and I decided on a whim to attend a panel about Star Wars Detours. We weren’t expecting much, but when George Lucas made a surprise appearance, it turned into one of the most memorable experiences of the entire convention.

Tips for staying flexible:
- Schedule time for spontaneity. Leave gaps in your itinerary for those last-minute decisions.
- Don’t be afraid to change your plans if something exciting comes up.
- Explore areas you didn’t plan for—like fan-led discussions or smaller panels.
Sometimes, the best experiences aren’t the ones you’ve meticulously planned for but the ones you stumble upon by chance.
3. Protect Your Cash and Cards
Star Wars Celebration can be a shopping paradise, with exclusive merchandise, rare collectibles, and artist booths offering one-of-a-kind items. To avoid financial mishaps, plan to protect your money and stick to your budget.
Money management tips:
- Bring cash: Some vendors may offer discounts for cash payments, and it helps you avoid overspending.
- Use a money belt or secure bag: Keep your cash and credit cards safe from pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like the vendor hall.
- Notify your bank: Let your credit card company know you’ll be attending the convention. Sudden large transactions in a different city could trigger a freeze on your account.
- Set a budget: Decide how much you’re willing to spend on merchandise and autographs ahead of time. (Yeah, I hope you have better luck with that than we do!)
A little financial planning can save you a lot of stress and ensure you don’t leave the convention with an empty wallet.
4. Bring an Extra Bag for Souvenirs
One of the most common mistakes attendees make is underestimating how much stuff they’ll end up buying. From exclusive Star Wars Celebration merchandise to unique collectibles, you’ll want to bring home a lot more than you came with.

Packing tips for souvenirs:
- Pack an empty duffel bag or collapsible luggage in your suitcase. This gives you extra room for your haul without having to ship items home.
- If you forget an extra bag, many vendors at the convention sell tote bags or luggage.
- If you prefer not to carry everything back yourself, look into shipping options offered at the convention (though this can be expensive).
By coming prepared, you’ll avoid the headache of trying to cram all your new treasures into an already-full suitcase.
5. Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated
Con exhaustion is real. Running from one event to another without stopping can leave you physically and mentally drained. To avoid burnout, make self-care part of your plan.
Star Wars Celebration is usually held at some of the largest convention centers in some of the largest cities. It is not for the faint of heart. You need to take care of yourself.

How to pace yourself:
- Take breaks between activities. Sit down, grab a snack, and recharge. Many convention centers have areas where you can relax for a bit.
- Stay hydrated. Carry a refillable water bottle with you—most venues have water stations.
- Bring snacks. Lines can get long, and food options might be limited. Having energy bars or other portable snacks on hand can be a lifesaver.
- Don’t skip meals. Even if you’re busy, take the time to eat. Food trucks or nearby restaurants often offer better options than those at the convention center.
Remember, the goal is to enjoy yourself, not to feel overwhelmed.
Bonus Tip: Preparing for Star Wars Celebration Your Way
Every attendee has a different approach to enjoying Star Wars Celebration. Some focus on cosplay, while others prioritize panels or shopping. My advice is to figure out what matters most to you and tailor your experience accordingly.
If you’re attending with friends or family, discuss your plans in advance and decide which activities to do together and when to split up. This way, everyone gets to enjoy what they love most.
