ComicCon-ing: Help Wizard World New Orleans Help Team Happy Foundation

Wizard World New Orleans

Wizard World New Orleans is one of our favorite cons. We have attended Wizard World cons in other cities and have enjoyed each one. One of the things that they do well is to tailor their conventions for the city they are in that weekend. Also, they love to give back to the communities they are in.

Team Happy Foundation

This year, they have collaborated with Team Happy Foundation to give reading materials to children who don’t typically have access to such things. Since this is a comic convention, they are explicitly asking for “child-appropriate graphic novels, comics, science fiction books, or any other similar materials to Wizard World New Orleans on January 4th-6th and leave them in a specially marked donation receptacle near the Special Guest Registration desk.”

This is a great idea. I grew up in an area that didn’t have a comic shop or a bookstore. As teachers, we know the power that reading provides a child. We also know that comic books and graphic novels can be as instructive and as enriching as any other form of Literature. We both have made connections to students that usually don’t read by introducing them to comics, or by just letting them know we read comics. Plus, graphic novels cover every genre. There are amazing memoirs, biographies, discussions of science, in addition to fiction. Reading leads to reading, and good reading is good reading. We both have advanced degrees, yet more than half of the books we read are comics, graphic novels, and sci-fi/fantasy books.
If giving the gift of reading isn’t’ enough, Wizard World New Orleans is making it even more enticing for fans. If you donate two or more materials to the Team Happy Foundation during Wizard World New Orleans, you will receive a pre-autographed celebrity photo from a selection of previous wizard world guests. They are first-come, first-served while supplies last and are for one per family.

I'm a husband to a woman who is nerdier than I am, and a father to a near perfect child. I am one of the main authors for this website, plus I handle most of the technical aspects (web design, editing podcasts, and videos, etc.) During the day, I'm a Computer Science and African American Studies Teacher. Most of my free time I'm listening to music or podcasts and watching soccer. I love Star Wars and Star Trek equally. I'm a horrible gamer yet I game. You can reach me at nolanerdcouple@gmail.com
