Comic Con-ing: Pensacon 2018, part 2

One of our favorite cons to attend is Pensacon, in Pensacola, FL. Not only are the workers and volunteers some of the nicest that we have ever encountered at a con, but they consistently get good guests, have quality panels, and supplement those with people from Escambia Amateur Astronomers Association with telescopes, West Florida Public Libraries conducting Superhero Training for kids, a gaming room with tons of different games being played all day (both tabletop and video), and The SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism), who recreate the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

It is not just the Pensacola Bay Center that gets involved; instead, the entire town takes part in the fun, from the airport to the restaurants. You can fly into Pensacola Intergalactic Airport and have lunch at the Star Trek Holodeck at Atlas Oyster House, where you could take a photo in the Captain’s chair and check out original props while you drink a James Tea Kirk or a Spock’s Mojito. Dinner could be at Nintendo at The Tin Cow, where you could eat Bob-omb Nachos or a Koopa Burger, drink Lon Lon Milk, or have a spiked shake like Yoshi’s Cookie and the Princess Peach. Everything downtown is walkable, so you do not have to worry if you imbibe in too much Milk of Poppy or Basilisk Blood at The Cabaret. Larger guest panels take place at various established around the town, like the Saenger Theatre, Pensacola Little Theatre, and the Rex Theatre. It truly is a wonderful weekend.

This year, we finally scored a room at the Pensacola Grand Hotel across the street from the Bay Center. Not only is it the official host hotel, but they have panels there and many of the guests stay there as well. We were giddy with excitement to finally be in the thick of the action day and night. If you read my previous blogs on Introducing: Nola Nerd Baby, you will know that I became pregnant in June 2017, which put my due date two weeks after Pensacon. I remained hopeful that even though I would be 38 weeks pregnant, I could take the three hour drive to Pensacola and attend. We had the host hotel, I could always just walk back to our room if I became tired. Right? Oh so wrong.

My doctor diagnosed me with preeclampsia and admitted me into the hospital on February 20th. I had my daughter on Thursday, February 22nd. Pensacon was February 23rd-25th. Needless to say, either one of us going was unfortunately out of the question.

There were so many guests this year that I was looking forward to meeting! A brief list:

  • Adam Brown: Ori in The Hobbit trilogy. I started dwarf poster and adding him would have been cool.
  • Arthur Darvill: Rory Williams in Doctor Who and Rip Hunter in Legends of Tomorrow. Rory is my absolute favorite companion (yes, he is a companion!) because his undying love for Amy Pond reminds me so much of my husband’s love for me.
  • Barbara Hershey: Cora Mills on Once Upon a Time and Ann Rutledge on Damien. I loved her on OUAT and the short-lived but amazing Damien, while my husband loved her from The Entity. She plays villainous so well.
  • Camille Coduri: Jackie Tyler on Doctor Who. I loved Rose’s family and Camille brought such a sweet comedy to her character.
  • Chris Sarandon: Prince Humperdinck in The Princess Bride, voice of Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas. TNBC is one of my all time favorite movies and I am itching to start a poster with all of the cast on it.
  • Claudia Gray: author of Star Wars novels, like Bloodline. I intend to read all of the new canon SW novels, so she would be cool to meet.
  • Hugh Spight: Gamorean guard and an Elom monster in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I probably have more Star Wars autographs than any other fandom. Even the background characters.
  • Ian McElhinney: Ser Barristan Selmy in Game of Thrones and General Dodonna in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Two of my top fandoms so I really wanted multiple signatures from him!
  • Jason Isaacs: Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, The Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels, and Captain Gabriel Lorca on Star Trek: Discovery. Even though I want his autograph for all of these characters, the amazing Lucius Malfoy would have be first. He was amazing in that role.
  • John de Lancie: Q in the Star Trek universe and the voice of Discord on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Discord is my favorite character on MLP.
  • Pom Klementieff: Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I am a big MCU fan so I would have loved to add her to my collection.
  • Seth Gilliam: Ellis Carver on The Wire. This is my husband’s number one fandom and the person he was looking forward to the most.
  • Wai Ching Ho: Madame Gao in the Netflix Marvel universe. She gave us a shoutout!

This list does not even include the cool guests that we have already met:

  • Tony Isabella: Creator of Black Lightning (now a television show!)
  • Tommy Flanagan: Chibs on Sons of Anarchy
  • Ryan Hurst: Opie on Sons of Anarchy
  • Ray Park: Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
  • Paul Blake: Greedo in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
  • Lou Ferrigno: The Incredible Hulk
  • John Barrowman: Capt. Jack Harkness on Doctor Who, Malcolm Merlyn on Arrow
  • Jason David Frank: The original Green Power Ranger
  • Ian Beattie: Meryn Trant on Game of Thrones (he gave us a shoutout!)
  • Garrick Hagon: Red Three (Biggs) in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
  • Charles Martinet: voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.
  • Brent Spiner: Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation

And these are just the ones I am interested in! Pensacon had over 100 guests!

Luckily, one of my best friends was going to the con and was able to be our correspondent. He wrote about his experience here (spoiler alert: he loved it). Next year, our daughter’s first birthday will be the Friday of Pensacon, which is February 22nd – 24th. Are we still going to go and celebrate her first birthday in Pensacola? You bet your sweet bippy we are! We cannot think of a better first birthday party for her, than to experience it with thousands of other like-minded people. She might think everyone is dressed up and having fun in honor of her birthday. And as far as I am concerned, they are. See you next year, Pensacon! We cannot wait to take our little Nola Nerd Baby!

ComicCon-ing: Science Activities and Panels at Pensacon

As teachers, we are always looking for ways to learn. Apparently so does Pensacon!  If you download the guide to your mobile device, you can filter the schedule to show the numerous science activities that Pensacon will be holding.  In addition to these activities, there will be a few panels discussing science issues and technology.

Daily

View the Stars:  No, this doesn’t refer to the celebrity autographing rooms. We are talking about looking at the cosmos. The Pensacola State College Planetarium will be holding Solar Day viewing and Skywatching Night Viewing. The solar day viewing will take place on Friday from 1-5, and Saturday and Sunday from 10-5:30.  The Skywatching Night Viewing will take place Friday and Saturday from 9 to midnight.

Robotics: The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) will be presenting  an hour long walking tour of their new lab and their robots.  To ensure your place on this tour, they recommend you register here. They have sessions throughout the weekend, but one session is already sold out, so book ahead!

Friday

From the Past to the Future: 3D Technology in Terrestrial and Underwater Archeology: I am going to have a hard time fighting the urge to speed on my way to Pensacon (don’t worry I will not speed).  This is one panel that I really want to attend.  This is a great idea for a panel for science and history fans. This panel will take place from 5:15 to 6 pm at Grand Hotel 1st Floor Room C.

SciFi 3D Printing and 3D Modeling: This panel will include a dmonstration and will end with a printing of a model spaceship. This panel will take place from 7:45 to 8:30 pm at Grand Hotel 1st Floor Room C.

Saturday

Earth Needs More People:  Author John Cserep will make his case for expansion of our species. This panel will take place from 12:15 to 1:00 pm at Grand Hotel 1st Floor Room C.

From the Depths of the Abyss to the Outer Reaches of Space: Naval Aviation The National Naval Aviation Museum will have items on display from deep water exploration and manned space flight.  Plus, you can see some of the historical inspirations for Steampunk. This panel will take place from 4:00 to 4:45 pm at Grand Hotel 1st Floor Room C.

National Flight Academy Demonstration: The staff of the National Flight Academy staff will have a flight simulator and rador station to show the public what their pilots work with. They will also discuss the technology used in their program.  This panel will take place from 4:15 to 5:45 pm at the Pensacola Little Theatre Courtroom.

Colonizing Mars in Our Lifetime: A discussion of where mankind is on our endeavor to reach the red planet. This panel will take place from 5:15 to 6 pm at the Grand Hotel 1st Floor Room C.

ComicCon-ing: Quick Pensacon Update

Pensacon is almost here!  Next week, we will do a week long preview of the con. Here are a few additions from our last writing:

Kimber Lee:  A cosplayer, model, and actress.

DJ Butler:  The author of speculative fiction will be returning to Pensacon.

Pensacon has also published their schedule. Considering that this con uses the whole downtown area, it is really worth checking out. Below is a map of the Trolley route which shows the other venues Pensacon uses.

We can’t wait!

ComicCon-ing: Very Early Pensacon Preview

Along with Wizard World New Orleans, Pensacon is one of our favorite cons. Occurring in February, Pensacon is a short three hour drive from New Orleans.  Each year we have gone, it has been worth the trip.

First a look at the celebrity guests:

  • Jason David Frank: The former Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger is always a crowd favorite.
  • Tara Reid: If you go take a look at her IMDB page, she has done quite a bit of work all over the map.  She was in The Big Lebowski, Cruel Intentions, American Pie, and Scrubs.  And of course, the Sharknado franchise.
  • Ric Flair: Whoooo!
  • Sam J. Jones:  He saved the universe as Flash Gordon.
  • Gates McFadden:  Back in college had a huge crush on Dr. Beverly Crusher.  I’ve met her before and she is sweet as can be.
  • Jeremy Bulloch:  Boba Fett himself.  We have met him multiple times and his very accommodating to his fans.
  • Nicholas Lea:  I’ve been thinking about starting an X-Files poster for some time.  I probably will start at Pensacon.
  • Matt Ryan:  While we didn’t watch Constantine, we did love Matt Ryan on arrow.
  • Scott Wilson:  Go look at his IMDB page.  He has an impressive body of work.  He had major roles in In the Heat of the Night and In Cold Blood.  While most fans will be there to get his autograph on The Walking Dead pictures, I really want a picture of him for his work in Damien.
  • John Wesley Shipp:  Barry Allen and Jay Garrick all rolled into one!
  • Rene Auberjonois: What do you get signed by this man?  A picture from MASH? Benson? Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?
  •  Terry Farewell: Man, I really need to back and watch all of Deep Space Nine!
  • Ted Raimi:  Ms. Nola Nerd Couple was beyond excited when Pensacon announced he would be there!
  • Virginia Madsen: She is part of the Candyman cast that will be at Pensacon, but I might ask her to sign a bottle of merlot.
  • Gemma Whelan:  Ms. Nola Nerd Couple will defitely have the actress that plays Yara Greyjoy sign her Game of Thrones poster.
  • Mitch Pileggi:  Mulder and Scully’s boss on X-Files. A neo-nazi on Sons of Anarchy.  Which one do I get him to sign for?
  • William B. Davis:  If I do get that X-Files, the Smoking Man needs to be on it.
  • Ellie Kendrick: Another guest to be on our Game of Thrones poster, she plays Meera Reed.
  • David Bradley:  Argus Filch. Walder Frey.  I’m expecting long lines for Mr. Bradley.
  • Mick Foley:  We don’t normally meet wrestlers but I might have to with Ric Flair and Mick Foley in attendance.
  • James Marsters:  Mr. Marsters played my favorite character on Buffy, Spike.  We have met him before and he is always entertaining.  If he does a panel, attend.
  • Walter Koenig:  Mr. Chekov on the original Star Trek.  I’ve met him twice before and barely utter a word.  That’s how I get around original cast memebers.
  • Tim Rose:  The actor inside Admiral Ackbar’s suit.  He will definately take time out to talk to you if you make small talk.  We met him at Celebration a couple of years ago and he was a blast.
  • Sylvester McCoy:  The seventh doctor and Radagast from the Hobbit.  We have his signature for both and if you are fan of both series, we highly recommend you go out and meet him.
  • Mike Zapcic and Ming Chen:  Two of AMC’s Comic Book men will be there.
  • Sven-Ole Thorsen:  I’m not sure if we have his autograph on our Mallrats poster.  If not, you will see us in his line.
  • Matt Gerald:  Mr. Gerald plays one of the more interesting characters on Daredevil, Melvin Potter.  We have two of the writers signature on a Daredevil poster, we might add to it.

Ok…I’m estimating the cost of every signature we want to be….$1237. We might have to pare that down a bit.  Luckily, Pensacon always gets great guests and plenty of these guest are repeaters.  And I can’t blame them.  It’s a great con in a great city.

Plus they always have great artists.  This year is no exception with guests such as Neal Adams, Dave Dorman, Kelly Yates, Pat Broderick, and Jose Delbo.  Pensacon always has interesting  panels and events, which we will talk about when we get closer to the con.

Pensacon will be held February 17-19.  If any more news about Pensacon comes about, we post about it.  We plan on doing a Comic-Con watch blog every Monday so keep checking back!.

ComicCon-ing: Pensacon 2016 Full Recap

Pensacon celebrated its third year in Pensacola this year and we decided to make a weekend of it and attend all three days. The first year, I drove up on Saturday morning with two of my good friends and last year, Kurt and I drove up on Saturday morning. Both years we made the three hour trek back to New Orleans at the end of the day, but this year, we drove up Friday afternoon and came back Sunday evening. Thus, we were able to experience much more than in previous years and enjoy many more aspects of the con that we had missed.

One of my big collections is autographs. I love meeting celebrities that star in shows that I love to watch and having that thirty second connection with them. This year, there were almost twenty people I wanted to meet and besides one, whom I decided to put off until another con, I accomplished my goal and received many new autographs and treasured items in the process. ComicCon-ing: Pensacon – Overview and Review

Pensacon 2016 was simply one of the best cons I’ve ever attended. Usually, when I write a review of a con, I have two or three better ifs. I can’t really think of any for this year’s con. Now part of that reason is that we planned well. We knew what we wanted to do and what we would have to give up. However, Pensacon, and by extension Pensacola, deserves most of the credit. They made the most of their limited space and held a great con.
