The Rings of Power: How Amazon’s Series Rekindled Our Passion for Middle-earth

Review of Rings of Power

When we first started watching The Rings of Power, it felt like just something to pass the time. But as the series unfolded, it became clear that this was more than just another fantasy show. This Rings of Power review will explore how the series reignited our passion for J.R.R. Tolkien’s world.

A Journey Through Middle-earth’s Second Age

Set thousands of years before The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954–55), The Rings of Power dives into the history of Middle-earth during the Second Age. The series begins in a time of relative peace, but its story spans key events that shaped Tolkien’s world:

  • The forging of the Rings of Power.
  • The rise of Sauron, the Dark Lord.
  • The fall of Númenor, a once-great island kingdom.
  • The formation of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

While Tolkien’s original works depict these events over thousands of years, the series condenses them into a more digestible timeline for modern audiences. This adaptation allows for a sweeping yet intimate look at Middle-earth’s history, bringing the grandeur of Tolkien’s mythos to life on screen.

The Ambitious History Behind The Rings of Power

The Rings of Power, developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay for Amazon Prime Video, is based on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings appendices. Amazon acquired the rights in 2017, investing $1 billion in the five-season series, making it the most expensive TV show ever.

Filmed in New Zealand and later the UK, Season 1 premiered in September 2022, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched original. Though praised for its visuals, it received mixed reviews from critics for pacing.

The Acting That Brought Middle-earth to Life

One of the most captivating aspects of The Rings of Power is the stellar performances of its cast. These actors breathed new life into Tolkien’s world and made it impossible for us to look away.

  • Morfydd Clark as Galadriel delivers a fierce and determined performance, showcasing the Elven warrior’s unrelenting quest to confront evil.
  • Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor brings the Elven smith’s ambition and vulnerability to the forefront, making the forging of the Rings of Power all the more impactful.
  • Daniel Weyman as The Stranger is mysterious and intriguing, keeping us guessing about his true identity throughout the series.
  • Robert Aramayo as Elrond captures the wisdom and grace of the young Elven politician, hinting at the leader he will one day become.

However, it is Charlie Vickers as Halbrand/Sauron who truly stole the show. His portrayal of a man tortured by his past, only for that past to be revealed as the most villainous in Middle-earth’s history, is masterful. Vickers’ depiction of Sauron’s deceptive persona as Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, is so convincing that you almost feel sympathy for him—almost. His performance not only holds up on repeated viewings but also adds layers of complexity to Sauron’s character, making him one of the most compelling figures in the series.

Our Rings of Power Review: Addressing the Critics

One recurring theme in The Rings of Power reviews is the debate about pacing and fidelity to Tolkien’s work.

Yes, The Rings of Power has its flaws. Some elements don’t perfectly align with Tolkien’s canon, and the first season’s pacing can feel slow at times. But we view these criticisms through a different lens.

These stories are myths, and myths don’t have a canonical path. If we want Tolkien’s world to remain alive and relevant, we must be willing to expand on it. Call it fan fiction if you like, but we see it as a way to bring the timeless themes of Middle-earth into the present day.

As for the pacing, we believe Amazon is playing the long game. By taking the time to build a solid foundation for this epic story, rather than relying on cheap tricks for quick ratings, they’re showing respect for the material and the fans.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Middle-earth?

We’re eagerly awaiting Season 3 of The Rings of Power and can’t wait to see how the story unfolds. To prepare, we’re planning a rewatch—not just of the series but of Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring and The Hobbit films as well. It is always worth a rewatch.

Tolkien’s world is vast and timeless, and The Rings of Power has reminded us why we fell in love with it in the first place. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to Middle-earth, this series is worth exploring—and revisiting.
