One of the best things about going to Star Wars Celebration is to forget your plan. That’s what led me to the stage hosting podcasts at Star Wars Celebration 2017.
Our first two days at Star Wars Celebration 2017 were spent navigating the chaos of autograph lines. While meeting Star Wars legends was incredible, the process was exhausting. By Saturday, we needed a break from the long lines and disorganization (more on that in our upcoming podcast review of Star Wars Celebration 2017). Star Wars Podcasts at Star Wars Celebration 2017
To recharge, Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple and I decided to spend some time apart. While she dove into the pin trading area, I headed to the podcasts at the Star Wars Celebration 2017 stage—one of the best decisions I made during the weekend. These podcast sessions not only gave me a chance to relax but also inspired me to keep improving our own show.
(Editor’s note: We no longer have a podcast. We talk about bringing it back with our daughter, but we have no concrete plans as of yet.)
Star Wars: In Character Podcast
On Saturday night, I attended the live recording of the Star Wars In Character podcast. This show has a fantastic concept: each episode focuses on a single character from Star Wars, with a preference for the more obscure ones. For their Star Wars Celebration 2017 episode, they chose to discuss Tessek, Jabba the Hutt’s bookkeeper.

It was a fascinating and humorous discussion. I never really considered the fact that a major gangster like Jabba would need an accountant, but it makes perfect sense. The hosts brought their trademark blend of humor and knowledge to the topic, making it both educational and engaging without ever feeling dry or pedantic. Instead, they maintained a playful and engaging tone, ensuring it was enjoyable for everyone in the live audience.
The live format also added a unique energy to the show. They incorporated audience participation and featured special guests. Early in the show, the Mandalorian Mercs presented the cast with honorary memberships. They even gave one of the podcasters a…well, let’s say we are a family-friendly blog, so I’ll leave that part to your imagination!

Later, they invited Kevin Leill, head of the Norse Legion, to join the discussion. To wrap things up, they opened the floor to questions and comments from the audience. The entire experience was seamless and entertaining. Even though the show ran for a full hour, it felt much shorter due to the hosts’ engaging nature.

The Star Wars Report
The next day, I attended The Star Wars Report podcast. Unfortunately, I arrived a little late and missed the beginning of the show, but I quickly settled into the lively discussion.

The hosts were joined by special guests Steele Saunders (host of Steele Wars) and Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly. Unlike the structured format of Star Wars: In Character, this podcast was a more freeform discussion, but it was just as engaging. (You can listen to the whole show here).

One of the standout moments came from Anthony Breznican, who made an intriguing point: for Star Wars to continue thriving, it may need to move beyond the Jedi. He wasn’t suggesting the removal of lightsabers or the Force, but rather the creation of a new group on the light side to replace the Jedi Order. The panelists even speculated whether Rey could be the foundation for this new group.
Looking back on it nearly a decade later, he was right. Andor is almost universally loved, and it doesn’t have a lightsaber in sight. Not that lightsabers are bad, but let’s face it, it is a big galaxy with plenty of stories to be told.
The conversation was both thought-provoking and fun, blending passion and humor seamlessly. The live band, High Adventure, added an extra layer of energy to the show, making it even more memorable.
Inspiration and Takeaways from Star Wars Podcasts at Star Wars Celebration 2017
Both podcasts at Star Wars Celebration 2017 left a lasting impression on me. As someone just starting to produce my podcast regularly, seeing these seasoned podcasters in action was incredibly inspiring.
Each show brought fresh, interesting perspectives to the Star Wars universe. The hosts were serious about their craft but never took themselves too seriously, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and fun. By the end of Star Wars Celebration 2017, both podcasts had earned a spot on my regular listening rotation.
Attending these live recordings reminded me why I love Star Wars fandom so much. Whether you’re discussing obscure characters like Tessek or debating the future of the Jedi, there’s a shared passion that brings fans together. These podcasts weren’t just entertaining—they were a celebration of the creativity and dedication that make Star Wars so special.
Why Star Wars Podcasts at Celebration Matter
Star Wars Celebration 2017 wasn’t just about movies, autographs, or merchandise. It was about connecting with the fandom in all its forms. Live podcasts like Star Wars: In Character and The Star Wars Report showcased the creativity, humor, and passion of the Star Wars community.
These shows offered a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the convention floor. They reminded me why I started podcasting in the first place—to share my love of Star Wars with others and to connect with a community that feels like family.
If you ever have the chance to attend a live podcast recording at a future Celebration, don’t miss it. You’ll laugh, learn, and leave feeling inspired.
May the Force be with you!
