WordPress has a daily prompt. I decided to use these prompts to pass the time when I’m waiting in the car, doctor’s office, etc., instead of doom-scrolling. While I won’t do this every day, I will do it from time to time. This is a quickly written blog that will often be done entirely on the phone.  Today’s wait is for supper to be brought to the table. Here is today’s subject: Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

When I really think about it, the most significant positive change I’ve consciously made recently is the act of writing this blog.. It might seem simple, even a little self-referential, but the ripple effects have been quite noticeable.

How the Blog is One Positive Change in My Life

Since I decided to dust off this digital space last month and commit to these occasional “writing while waiting” sessions, I’ve become much more mindful of how I spend my downtime. The urge to endlessly scroll through news feeds and social media, a habit I’d fallen into without realizing its draining effect, has lessened considerably. Instead, I find myself looking forward to these brief moments of creative expression.

Interestingly, this small act of writing has also rekindled my love for reading. Perhaps it’s the renewed focus on words and narratives, but I’ve found myself reaching for books more often, eager to immerse myself in different worlds and perspectives. This is a welcome change, as I’d felt my reading habits wane over time.

Beyond the personal benefits of reduced screen time and increased reading, this blogging endeavor ties into my professional life as well. As someone who teaches computer science, the opportunity to tinker with the backend of this WordPress site – delving into PHP and JavaScript to customize its appearance and functionality – is a valuable way to keep my technical skills sharp and up-to-date. It’s a practical application of the concepts I teach, which reinforces my own understanding.

Furthermore, the process of learning about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to ensure these thoughts reach a wider audience has been surprisingly engaging. It’s like a puzzle, figuring out how to connect with people who might find these reflections relatable. This constant learning keeps my brain active and curious which may prove useful as advance in years.

The Payoff

Ultimately, this commitment to writing, even in these small bursts of time, has brought a sense of purpose and mindful engagement to moments that were previously just… waiting. It’s a positive change I intend to nurture and continue.
