GalaxyCon New Orleans for Adults: Be a Good Human!

Time for me to turn into Nola Nerd Dad. As a nerdy dad, I’m all about making sure everyone has a fun and safe time at events like these. GalaxyCon’s after-hours activities can be a blast, but they also come with some unspoken rules to keep things comfortable for everyone.

Whether you’re a seasoned con-goer or new to these events, it’s important to remember that respect and boundaries go a long way in making these spaces enjoyable for all.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Cosplay is not consent: It doesn’t matter how elaborate or revealing someone’s outfit is—comments about their body or appearance can quickly cross the line. Instead, focus on complimenting the craftsmanship of their cosplay. For example, “The detail on your armor is amazing!” is much better than something about how they look “in” the costume. This is true even if they have a website that allows you to see them without their cosplay. Be a good human.
  2. Ask before taking photos: It’s always best to politely ask someone for permission before snapping a picture. Many cosplayers are happy to pose but may need a moment to adjust or prepare. If someone says no, respect their answer and move on.
  3. Watch your body language: Don’t stand too close to people, especially if you’re chatting for the first time. Personal space is important, and hovering can make someone feel uncomfortable.
  4. Social cues matter: If someone is giving short answers, avoiding eye contact, or stepping away, take the hint and let them go. It’s nothing personal—sometimes people need a break or aren’t in the mood for a conversation. AND NO THEY DON’T OWE YOU A CONVERSATION.
  5. No touching without consent: Whether it’s a prop, costume, or the person themselves, always ask before you touch anything. Even if it seems harmless, some people are protective of their work or uncomfortable with physical contact.
  6. Avoid personal questions: Keep conversations light and focused on shared interests. Asking about their cosplay, favorite fandoms, or the convention itself is a safer bet than diving into personal topics.

At the end of the day, the goal is to create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued. These events are meant to celebrate creativity, fandom, and community, not to make anyone feel uneasy. So, have fun, be kind, and remember: it’s always better to err on the side of caution. I go into even more detail in our Comic Con 101 article on how to respect cosplayers!

Intent doesn’t matter when it comes to harassment; perception does.

Be a good human!
