Fan Expo New Orleans, how we missed you. The past few years have been a whirlwind, filled with challenges that made it hard to fully dive into the things we love. Hurricanes, pandemics, and the never-ending grind of life kept many of us from enjoying simple joys like comic conventions. But this year, I’m ready to return to Fan Expo New Orleans 2023, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Last year, I only got to attend Fan Expo New Orleans 2022 for about an hour and a half. At the time, life was overwhelming. Our house was still missing a roof and siding after Hurricane Ida. Work was chaotic, as we were still teaching at a different high school than our usual workplace. Weekends, which should have been for rest or fun, were spent tackling endless to-do lists.
Still, for those brief hours I spent at the con, I had an absolute blast. This year, I’m counting down the days to fully embrace the magic of Fan Expo New Orleans 2023 with my family.
Looking Back: Fan Expo New Orleans 2022
Even though my time at last year’s event was short, it left a lasting impact. I managed to meet Mark Russell, a comic creator I genuinely admire. His run on The Flintstones is some of the finest intellectual property writing I’ve ever seen. I had hoped to buy a book from him and get it signed, but unfortunately, his luggage didn’t make it to New Orleans, so he had nothing to sell. Yet, meeting the person behind such incredible work was a highlight I’ll always cherish.
Another highlight of Fan Expo New Orleans 2022 was the cosplay. As always, the creativity on display blew me away. One of my favorites was a spot-on Doc Ock cosplay that captured the spirit of the character perfectly. I also got to reconnect with some of my con friends – you know, those people you only see at conventions, yet who feel like family because of the shared love for fandoms.
And of course, I couldn’t miss the Sons of Anarchy panel, featuring members of the cast. It was such a treat to hear stories from behind the scenes of a show I’ve loved for years. Panels like these are what make Fan Expo New Orleans so special – they bring fans closer to the creators and actors who shape the stories we love.
Why Fan Expo New Orleans 2023 Is So Special
This year’s Fan Expo New Orleans 2023 feels like the perfect con for us. After everything my family has been through over the past three years – from hurricanes to family health battles – it’s time to reconnect with the things we love: New Orleans, comic conventions, and the joy of fandom.
One major highlight for me will be meeting Sam Raimi, the director of Spiderman 2. That movie holds a special place in my heart. I saw it four times in theaters back when I didn’t have much disposable income, and it remains my favorite superhero movie of all time. The film is a masterpiece, and meeting the man who brought it to life will be a dream come true. Plus, Raimi is also the man behind Evil Dead, which ensured I didn’t sleep for three days after my first viewing. Needless to say, I’ll be a bit starstruck!
In the world of books, I’m thrilled to see Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) and Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley). Both characters were my favorites in the Harry Potter series, and getting to meet the actors who brought them to life will be a treat. I’m also looking forward to meeting Anson Mount. While Inhumans wasn’t my favorite show, Mount’s performance was exceptional, and he brought a captivating presence to every scene despite his character being non-verbal.
The Joy of Experiencing Fan Expo with Family
This year, attending Fan Expo New Orleans 2023 is extra special because I’ll get to experience it with my wife and our little one. We’ve faced so much as a family over the past few years, but we’ve always found joy in comic cons and dressing up together. Our daughter loves the attention she gets when she’s in costume – she’s an extrovert through and through! Watching her delight in the convention atmosphere is one of my favorite parts of the experience.
I also can’t wait to reconnect with our con friends, buy art and comics directly from creators, and stop by the 501st Booth, which is always a must-see at any convention. There’s something uniquely magical about holding a piece of art you just purchased from the person who created it. It’s a reminder of why these conventions matter so much – they bring fans and creators together in a way that’s deeply personal and inspiring.
