Eating: Beet and Lime Gelato at La Divina Gelateria

I am all about eating healthy as often as I can. I know I should eat more vegetables. This why I couldn’t pass up the Beet and Lime gelato from La Divina Gelateria on Magazine Street the other night.

Let’s not quibble about what form the vegetables took.

Gelati came late to me in life. In fact, my first time experiencing this amazing dessert was done properly…in Italy. We were in Florence, near the Accademia Gallery, when Cristina said it was time to have some gelato. I couldn’t decide so I had gelati…pineapple and strawberry. I can’t truly describe how good it was since this is a family blog. However, the standards were set pretty high.

After eating at Ninja with friends for our friend’s Tracy’s birthday, we decided on dessert on Magazine. Luckily Sucre and La Divina are close to each other so if one is busy, it is a short walk to the other.

Normally, I would just stick to a fruit flavor sorbet gelato. However, the Beet and Lime flavor was calling to me. This gelato was a bright lavender color. However, Ponchatoula Strawberry was also screaming to me as well.

I did what any sensible person would do. I ordered both.

First the strawberry. This was the best gelato I’ve had stateside. Smooth, creamy, and it actually did taste like fresh strawberries. However, it’s reign was short-lived.

Now to be completely honest, I have never really liked beets as a kid and I don’t honestly remember eating them as an adult. I really didn’t know what to expect. I ordered with my eyes. What I got was a strong beet flavor at first. Just when it seemed it would be just too much beet flavor, the lime would kick in. I would have never thought to put those two flavors together, but much like strawberries and cream they are perfect companions.
