Big Easy Con had a rough start. They felt they weren’t ready for the convention in June, so they did the right thing and postponed. Of course, that angered quite a few people, as we have discussed earlier. We applauded them for realizing their show was not up to their standards. We also said they would have to work hard to build back trust. They started off on the right foot by announcing Zachary Levi as their first guest for their new dates. Now, we are a month away, and let’s take a Big Easy Con 2019 preview to see how well this show is shaping up.
Spoiler: it looks to be a great con.
The celebrity lineup is fantastic. New Orleans’s own Anthony Mackie will be there. Mr. Mackie may be the most entertaining guest on the convention circuit. He will take the time to talk to all of is fans and is quite simply larger than life.
We also can’t wait to meet “Weird Al” Yankovic. Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple has been a huge fan of his since she was a little girl. Every time we he has come in concert we always end up having something else planned, like a trip to Korea. We will be meeting him for sure.
The guest that we will be spending the most money on is Phil LaMarr. His extensive voice work has led him to many roles in the Star Wars Universe, and as members of the Star Wars Autograph Universe, we must meet him!
I don’t have enough money to purchase autographs again (thanks diapers) from members of the Star Trek Universe. However, I do have a poster of The Next Generation cast signed by Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and Marina Sirtis. All three will be at Big Easy Con, and all are great guests. Ms. Sirtis was exceptionally great and talked to us at length when we met her.
Other celebrity guests appearing at Big Easy Con include:
Big Easy Con also boasts a strong comic creator lineup. David Finch teamed up with Tom King on the first arc of the Batman Rebirth series. Gabe Soria’s The Murder Ballads is a great read, and Gabe is just an all-around excellent human being. Lafeyette’s Rob Guillory, artist for the superb series The Chew, will also be at the convention. We are really excited to meet Tim Sale, who was the artist on the incredible Batman: The Long Halloween. If you haven’t read it, do it…now!
Other comic guests include:
While it is early to discuss programming at Big Easy Con early, the organizers have planned quite a few great things for families to do.
First, there is Big Easy Con Jr. They have some great events scheduled for kids, including board game demos and readings with local authors. They will also have a few screenings. We are looking forward to the Kid’s Costume Parade on the Sunday of the con.
One of our favorite bookstores, Tubby & Coo’s, is sponsoring a Reading is Magic program. Every participant will get a FREE weekend kid’s pass to the event and a discount code for regular passes too! (Kids tickets are for ages 3-10.)
Of course, Big Easy Con will be having a costume contest. The deadline is October 15, so sign up soon!
Don’t forget to buy your tickets!
We are really excited for this con and hope to see you there!
