A few years ago, Mrs. Nola Nerd sister (Dina) told us about Star Wars Destiny. It is a card and dice game about our favorite franchise.
We resisted at first, but Mrs. Nola Nerd’s other sister (Cara) and her husband (Darin) became fanatics about it.
Then we played at Star Wars Celebration Orlando in 2017. That week my wife went out and bought a big box of cards and dice.
When we came home, we were able to conceive our perfect little girl. However, this came with a cost.
We stopped playing Destiny.
Well, Darin and Cara started playing other Star Wars games besides Destiny from Fantasy Flight Games. He and Cara also play X-Wing.
They couldn’t make it to Celebration in Chicago due to their newest being born two weeks before the convention.
He messaged us asking us to pick up anything we could get our hands on from Fantasy Flight Games.
On Saturday, I headed straight for their booth. I was able to get the Vader exclusive for their game Legion.
While I was waiting, Dina and my wife were at the Her Universe booth. While there, they ran into Kathleen Kennedy.
Yeah, I’m not salty about it. Not at all.
Well, they came to the Fantasy Flight Games booth while I was in line. Since there was still a ways to go in the line, they decided to play a game of Destiny.
What was great about the booth is that Fantasy Flight Games had people there instructing you and advising you while you played. You didn’t have to have any experience whatsoever to play.
My wife had Obi-Wan and Satine, while Dina had General Grievous and two droids. It was a tight game, but Dina’s two battle droids pulled it out.
Later that night, my wife asked if we could return to the booth before the con ended and play a game of Destiny.
On Monday, she retook the light side. This time she went on the defensive. While Destiny is definitely a game of chance, it also requires some strategy.
‘
She took every advantage of rolling shields to protect her two characters. Every time I launched a major offensive I had to deal with those shields. When I got rid of the shields, she would roll more and made sure she employed them especially on Obi who was her strongest character thanks to upgrades.
Just when I thought I broke through her defenses with a significant attack almost wiping out Kenobi, she launched a counteroffensive. I couldn’t handle it and lost the match.
Simply put, this was probably my favorite moment of Star Wars Celebration. My wife and I were just enjoying a Star Wars game together.
It was loud and crazy in the exhibit hall, but we were just two people enjoying each others company.
We headed straight over to the booth and picked up more Destiny cards.
We will play more Destiny in the future. And hopefully, I win at least once!
