It echoes that amazing scene in Doctor Zhivago where there is a massacre of a protest on the streets. We don’t see the massacre, we only see Zhivago’s face.
While they do cut to other people in the massacre, the real story of the massacre is being played on Diego Luna’s face.
I think it is the best scene in all of Star Wars, and Diego Luna deserves an Emmy for this alone.
Genevieve O’Reilly
Mon Mothma
Genevieve O’Reilly shines as Mon Mothma, delivering a nuanced performance that balances vulnerability with unflinching resolve. Her Senate speech is a career-defining moment.
The speech is a seminal moment in Star Wars lore thanks to Rebels, and O’Reilly steps up to the challenge.
The moment also marks the death and rebirth of Mothma. Death to her old way of life and to her being also a mother and a wife.
She is now reborn as the leader of the Rebellion. Even getting rid of an aide that has been secretly protecting her is part of her metamorphsis. She really can’t have her own life any more.
Adria Arjona
Bix Caleen
Adria Arjona brings quiet devastation to Bix Caleen, illustrating the personal sacrifices rebellion demands.
When I am asked by students why some people didn’t do more in tough times, I often respond because children, our children, usually make us cowards. It is a personal attachment that doesn’t lead to the dark side, but may lead to choosing the needs of the few over those of the many.
Bix makes that choice for Andor, allowing him to become what the Rebellion needs him to be. Arjona is so brilliantly devastating it. It is an impossible choice, made out of love, and Arjona plays it perfectly.
Kyle Soller & Denise Gough
Syril Karn & Dedra Meero
Kyle Soller and Denise Gough add depth to their Imperial characters, portraying Syril Karn’s obsession and Dedra Meero’s unraveling with chilling precision.
Syril is a bureaucrat. He isn’t cut out for the life he is leading on Ghorman. He is Dolores Umbridge’s evil, which is what makes him so evil. But he directs his evil to those he feels are upsetting the order.
Dedra, I believe, loves Syril, but doesn’t know what that means. She has been so consumed by hate since she was a child, she only sees happiness in the context of the Empire.
These performances elevate the emotional stakes of the story, making every victory hard-won and every loss deeply felt.
