The Cure Live at UNO Lakefront Arena on May 11, 2016

Seeing The Cure live is an unforgettable experience, but for me, one moment stood out above all others: hearing “Plainsong”. It’s not just a song—it’s the song I wanted to hear most.

Why “Plainsong” Matters

“Plainsong” isn’t just any track; it’s the opening song of Disintegration, The Cure’s magnum opus. It sets the tone for the entire album with its ethereal beauty and emotional depth. Hearing it live was one of those moments when time seemed to stand still.

As the lights dimmed and the sound of wind chimes filled the air, I turned to my sister and asked her to start filming. After a brief technical false start, the music swelled, filling the arena with its majestic sound. When Robert Smith stepped onto the stage, playing his six-string bass, I was transported back to my teenage years—listening to Disintegration for the first time.

The Cure as Plainsong Started

A Journey Through The Cure’s Discography

The setlist that night was a dream for any Cure fan. After “Plainsong,” the band played the next two tracks from Disintegration. For a moment, I thought they might perform the entire album, and while they didn’t, the night was still filled with surprises and rare gems.

Highlights of the Night:

  • “This Twilight Garden”: A B-side from the High single made its live debut that night. It was a beautiful, unexpected treat.
  • “Last Dance”: Another rare performance that thrilled longtime fans.
  • “Fascination Street”: A song with ties to New Orleans, it felt like a perfect fit for the venue.
  • “Prayers for Rain” and “Disintegration”: These two tracks, performed back-to-back, were spine-chilling and emotional.

The encores were equally incredible, featuring fan favorites like “Charlotte Sometimes”, “Boys Don’t Cry”, and “The Same Deep Water as You”.

The Emotional Impact of “Plainsong”

What made “Plainsong” so special wasn’t just the song itself—it was the feeling it created in the crowd. For many of us, The Cure was music we listened to alone, finding solace in their lyrics. But during that performance, surrounded by thousands of fans, it was clear we were never truly alone.

Hearing “Plainsong” live reminded me of why I go to concerts: those rare, transcendent moments that transport you to another time and place.

A Perfect Night (With a Few Missing Pieces)

While the setlist was nearly perfect, I did miss hearing “Homesick” and “Untitled,” which would have completed the Disintegration experience. And though “Friday I’m in Love” didn’t cut (much to my sisters’ disappointment), the show’s deep cuts and rare tracks more than made up for it.

The venue was intimate, Robert Smith’s voice was as strong as ever, and the band was in top form.

Looking Ahead

As the show ended, Robert Smith hinted at the possibility of returning to New Orleans in the future. If they do, I’ll be there without hesitation. This night was a reminder of why The Cure remains timeless—both their music and their ability to connect with fans on such a deep level.

Final Thoughts on The Cure Live at UNO 5/11/16

The Cure’s performance was more than a concert; it was a celebration of their legacy and the emotional connection their music creates. “Plainsong” was the highlight of the night for me, but every song felt like a gift.

If you love The Cure, don’t miss the chance to see them live. And if they play “Plainsong,” let it wash over you and remind you of why their music matters.
