This Review of Star Wars: The High Republic (2021) explores why Cavan Scott’s comic series is a must-read for fans of the galaxy far, far away. Through its compelling characters, high-stakes storytelling, and exciting new threats, Star Wars: The High Republic (2021) delivers everything you could want in a Star Wars comic.
About Star Wars: The High Republic
Star Wars: The High Republic, also known as Phase I of the larger High Republic multimedia project, is a canon comic series published by Marvel Comics. Written by Cavan Scott, the series debuted on January 6, 2021, and concluded on March 2, 2022, spanning a total of 15 issues.
The artwork of Star Wars: The High Republic (2021) is the result of a talented team of artists who brought this action-packed and intrigue-filled era to life. With Ario Anindito and Georges Jeanty as the primary pencillers, Mark Morales and Karl Story handling inking duties, and colorists like Annalisa Leoni and Carlos Lopez adding vibrant energy to the pages, the visuals perfectly complement the sweeping storytelling. Together, this creative team crafted a series that immerses readers in the golden age of the Jedi with stunning detail and dynamic action.
Set approximately 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the series explores the Jedi Order during its prime, when the galaxy faced existential threats like the Nihil, a group of ruthless space marauders, and the Drengir, sentient plant-like creatures with a hunger for destruction.
The series primarily follows three Jedi (shown on the cover above):
- Avar Kriss: The charismatic leader whose decisions often clash with the Jedi Council.
- Sskeer: A Trandoshan Jedi Master struggling with a condition that challenges his connection to the Force.
- Keeve Trennis: A young Jedi Knight grappling with self-doubt despite her clear readiness for the role.
Why The High Republic Comic Stands Out
Cavan Scott’s The High Republic is more than just another entry in the expansive Star Wars universe—it’s an essential addition that perfectly balances action, intrigue, and character development.
Engaging Characters
The heart of this series lies in its characters. Avar Kriss’s leadership style offers a refreshing perspective on the Jedi, showing how even the most revered leaders can face conflict with the Council. Keeve Trennis’s journey is deeply relatable, as she navigates self-doubt while proving herself worthy of her role. Sskeer’s battle with an illness that disrupts his connection to the Force brings a unique, emotional layer to the story, highlighting how even Jedi face vulnerabilities.
This series excels at making readers emotionally invested in the characters. The stakes feel real because anyone can be lost, and that constant tension drives the story forward.

High-Stakes Storytelling
From the very first issue, The High Republic throws readers into the action without bogging them down with unnecessary exposition. The storytelling is fast-paced and engaging, introducing the villains—the Nihil and the Drengir—through their actions rather than lengthy backstories.
The Nihil are chaotic and ruthless, embodying the perfect adversary for the Jedi during this era. Meanwhile, the Drengir bring an entirely new kind of threat that adds depth to the series, leaving readers eager to uncover more about their origins and motivations.
With both, I didn’t care to get all of the back story. They were presented as a here-and-now threat, and that is a perfect way to introduce villains from other stories to new readers.
Representation in the Galaxy
One of the standout elements of this series is its representation. Sskeer’s condition, which threatens to sever his connection to the Force, is a unique and thoughtful exploration of disability within the Star Wars universe. It’s a meaningful addition that broadens the scope of what representation can look like in science fiction and fantasy.
Accessibility for New Readers
What makes this series even more impressive is its accessibility. Even if you haven’t read the accompanying High Republic novels or other media, you won’t feel lost. The narrative provides just enough context to immerse readers in the story while leaving them hungry to explore more about this era.
Review of Star Wars: The High Republic (2021): Strengths of the Series
- Action-Packed Storytelling: The series keeps you on the edge of your seat, delivering action and suspense in every issue.
- Memorable Villains: The Nihil and Drengir are menacing, mysterious, and perfectly suited for this timeline.
- Fresh Concepts: From a Jedi struggling with a debilitating condition to the tensions between Avar Kriss and the Council, the series offers fresh perspectives on the Jedi Order.
- Emotional Stakes: The sense that any character could be lost at any moment raises the tension and makes the outcomes feel impactful.
Review of Star Wars: The High Republic (2021): Weaknesses
Honestly, there aren’t many weaknesses to point out. While more backstory might have been helpful in some areas, the series succeeds in sparking curiosity rather than overwhelming readers. This is exactly what a multimedia project like The High Republic needs—content that compels readers to explore more of the era without making them feel obligated to do so.
Working My Way Through Marvel Star Wars Comics
Inspired by my goal of Reading Marvel Star Wars Comics in Chronological Order, I’ve embarked on an exciting journey through the galaxy far, far away. Starting with the High Republic timeline, I’ve already read The High Republic: The Blade (#1-#4) and The High Republic Vol. 2 (#1-#10). These comics brought Porter Engle, the famed “Blade of Bardotta,” and the Jedi Order’s golden age to life, immersing me in the challenges and triumphs of this era.
Unplanned, but inspired by this, I started reading The Light of the Jedi, the first book published about The High Republic. The reading of books will probably not be as structured as comics because of the accessibility of the books. By the way, I’m a fourth of the way done with The Light of the Jedi, and it does an amazing job of introducing characters through action.
Review of Star Wars: The High Republic (2021): Final Thoughts
Star Wars: The High Republic by Cavan Scott is a masterclass in Star Wars storytelling. From its compelling characters to its high-stakes plot, this comic series is everything a Star Wars fan could hope for. It’s accessible for newcomers, emotionally resonant, and packed with action, making it an essential read for fans of the galaxy far, far away.
