For many fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano’s journey was deeply personal. Like many others, I wasn’t her biggest fan at first. I’ll admit it—I hated her in the beginning. She was introduced as a typical teenager, and Anakin Skywalker’s nickname for her, “Snips,” seemed to capture her attitude perfectly. But as the series unfolded, so did Ahsoka’s character, and my perspective shifted dramatically.
Ahsoka Lives!
From Dislike to Devotion
As I became more invested in The Clone Wars, my feelings for Ahsoka changed. At first, I tolerated her episodes—“Okay, I don’t mind seeing an Ahsoka storyline.” Then, without realizing it, I found myself eagerly awaiting them. Her story arc, her growth, and, ultimately, the way she exited the series made her one of the most compelling characters in the Star Wars universe.
Despite leaving the Jedi Order, Ahsoka never wavered in her principles. She became the embodiment of what a Jedi should be, even outside the Order. Her moral compass and resilience were why, when my wife asked me who my favorite Star Wars character was, I didn’t hesitate to say Ahsoka Tano. (Side note: She was asking about what lanyard I wanted from Amazon, and to my dismay, Ahsoka wasn’t an option—so I went with Rey instead.)
Today, Ahsoka has become even more beloved thanks to her live-action series, Ahsoka, which debuted on Disney+. Seeing Rosario Dawson bring her to life was incredible, and now, with a second season expected, Ahsoka’s story continues to grow in exciting ways.
Meeting Ashley Eckstein: The Voice Behind the Legend
One of the highlights of Star Wars Celebration 2017 was meeting Ashley Eckstein, the talented voice actress behind Ahsoka Tano. She was one of the final signatures we needed for our Clone Wars poster, which already featured the names of several cast members.
When Ashley saw how many autographs we had collected, she was surprised we hadn’t met her before. She took the time to chat with each of us and even noticed that my wife’s sister was wearing one of her Her Universe jumpers. Ashley’s warmth and genuine connection with fans made the experience unforgettable—it’s no wonder she’s so beloved by the Star Wars community.
The next day, during the Rebels panel, Dave Filoni, the mastermind behind The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, gave fans an unforgettable moment. He walked onto the stage wearing a shirt that read “Ahsoka Lives?”
This particular Saturday was also Ahsoka Lives Day, a fan-organized celebration dedicated to the character. Filoni, ever the clever storyteller, was fully aware of the fan meetup planned for later that day. In true Filoni fashion, he was trolling us in the best way possible.
After the panel, fans gathered on the main steps of the convention center for the official Ahsoka Lives Day photo. Anyone cosplaying as Ahsoka or wearing Ahsoka-themed clothing joined in for the massive group shot. Ashley Eckstein was there, of course, and so was Dave Filoni—this time wearing a new shirt that replaced the question mark with an exclamation point: “Ahsoka Lives!”
That moment solidified Ahsoka’s importance in Star Wars fandom. Her journey from a divisive character to a beloved icon was fully realized in the faces of the fans who came together to celebrate her.
Ahsoka’s Popularity Soars
Later that day, I attended the Marvel panel, where an informal poll asked fans who they thought the next Star Wars comic series should focus on. Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming response was Ahsoka.
It was clear that Ahsoka Tano resonated with fans in a way few characters did. Her journey, her struggles, and her growth made her relatable and inspiring. The fact that she continues to appear in new Star Wars stories—whether in animated series like The Clone Wars and Rebels (a show that, much like Ahsoka, had to grow on me) or in her own live-action show—proves her enduring popularity.
Now, with the Ahsoka series expanding her story and the anticipation of a second season, her legacy grows even stronger.
Why Ahsoka Tano Matters
Ahsoka Tano’s story is one of resilience, growth, and standing firm in your beliefs. Her journey mirrors the struggles many of us face in our own lives, which is why she has become such a beloved character. At Star Wars Celebration 2017, the energy and excitement surrounding her proved that she wasn’t just a fan favorite—she was a symbol of what makes Star Wars so special.
From her early days as “Snips” to her rise as a fan-favorite Jedi, Ahsoka embodies the heart of Star Wars: hope, perseverance, and the strength to follow your own path. And thanks to the fans and creators who bring her to life, Ahsoka truly does live.
