Reviewing: 2014 Year in Review – May through September

Part 2 of my 2014 Year in Review.

May

The second weekend of Jazz Fest we saw Bruce Springsteen on the main stage. It was jam packed and hard to hear him and it made us realize that we should never main stage Jazz Fest again. Not worth it.

Bruce Springsteen at Jazz Fest…way too crowded.

Hangout Fest was super fun. It’s on the beach and it’s relaxing and it’s so chill. We saw Trombone Shorty, Childish Gambino, the Black Keys, the Flaming Lips, the Killers, and probably some more people that I can’t think of right now. Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips literally walked right next to us during the Black Keys’ performance. We dug holes in the sand, put our towels on top, and just relaxed. We wanted to see Outkast, but of course, we bought tickets before the times were announced, and they were set to play on Sunday night at 10pm. Since we had to work Monday morning, we opted to skip Sunday. Voodoo Fest luckily made up for it.

Comicpalooza in Houston was a rousing success. For the first time in my life, I was star struck. I met one of my idols, Cary Elwes, and I literally burst out crying. Additionally, we met John Barrowman, Jason Mewes, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Doctors from Doctor Who, and Clark Gregg aka Agent Coulson from Agents of Shield. It was a phenomenal con and I hope we get to go back in 2015!

On May 28th, our third year anniversary, we saw the Old 97’s at One Eyed Jacks. It was especially special because when he asked me to marry him, he played their song “Question” in the background. They were so energetic and fun. If you’ve seen The Break-Up, that’s the band Jennifer Aniston goes to see and waits for Vince Vaughan to appear.

The very next day, I flew to Las Vegas to meet up with my mom, grandma, and two sisters. Not only was the girls long weekend in Vegas fun, I also saw the Backstreet Boys. We were on the floor, literally pressed against the stage. My sister won a VIP and gave it to me, so I got to meet the boys and got their autographs as well. It was a blast.

June

My sister flew back with me from Vegas, and we did some fun, touristy things while she was here. We toured the Abita Brewery, which was awesome. Not only is it free, it is all you can drink. They literally just let you behind the bar to drink out of the taps and even tell you to grab whichever bottles you want out of the fridge. We also saw Jack White. Even though Jack White loves New Orleans and comes a lot, I always seem to miss him, so it was great hearing him live. He played songs from The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, the Dead Weather, and his solo stuff.

Beth and I saw Bruno Mars, who just oozed sex. Seriously, I felt he used his eyes and body to make out with every girl there, and probably most of the guys too. Not complaining.

Kurt and I then went to Disney again, but only for a day. We did Star Wars Weekends at Hollywood Studios. That weekend was the Clone Wars weekend, so I met James Arnold Taylor, Matt Lanter (and his gorgeous wife, Angela, who runs Hello Gorgeous, a fashion blog), Dee Bradley Baker, and Catherine Taber.

Matt Lanter at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends…it was rainy and I had an eye issue, so please excuse my appearance!

July

Almost all of July was spend in the United Kingdom! Kurt and I did a study abroad in Scotland, Ireland, North Ireland, and England. I will talk about this in depth in a series of blogs, but for now, suffice to say that we spent the majority of our time in Edinburgh (which I will happily move to in a heartbeat), with highlight excursions including Dublin, London, Loch Ness, St. Andrews, and Belfast. Simply breathtaking and definitely a trip to remember.

August

I started off August by seeing Justin Timberlake with Beth. That boy can sing, dance, play, you name it. Phenomenal.

On the 26th, our sweet cat, Naya, died of liver failure. She was the most sociable cat with the biggest personality. It was Kurt’s cat pre-us, so he evacuated with her during Katrina and she kept him company during all his lonely basketball driven days. We’ll miss her inquisitive nature and persnickety attitude, especially to our other cats. You were a good girl, Naya.

September

Besides seeing Gone with the Wind for the first time on the big screen at AMC, nothing too much happened. Just a busy month filled with work and grad school!

Mrs. Nola Nerd

I’m Mrs. Nola Nerd, a 30ish-year-old nerd who loves traveling, food, Star Wars, The Legend of Zelda, autographs, Third Man Records releases (and any other band I like), and all kinds of other nerdy stuff. My love of travel and food stems from my family. I love being able to share all my nerdy tendencies with my husband and now our baby girl.
