Writing About Children in Blogs

Parenting Blogs

Writing about children in blogs is strange. Parenting blogs are weird. So, therefore, our blog is weird and strange.

We are in a historical period where every single person can document their life. It is very democratic.

It is the main reason we started this blog – to document our life.

Of course, the blog evolved over time. We have become a combo nerd news site and a personal blog.

And there is nothing more personal than writing about children in blogs.

Protecting the Nola Nerd Baby

We have made some attempts to protect our baby with our blog and social media. We refer to her as the Nola Nerd Baby not for branding purposes (even though it helps), but as to not put her name out there. It’s a small protection, but it’s one we will always maintain.

Also, when she is old enough to say she doesn’t want us to write about her, we will honor her wishes. She is entitled to tell us, when she can, what she wants to be posted or not. Until then, we will write about what we find interesting about being parents.

While we are interested in monetizing our blog, we don’t ever want to put on a fake family life in the interest of making money. For instance, we will only post ads for things we believe in when it comes to her. (For instance, the forumal mixer below).

We are going to be real working parents with a side gig of working on our website. We will not ever let maintaining this website get in the way of raising her. It’s her first; this second…even if we get to the point were this blog does make money.

What we truly love about writing about her is how spread our families are. Just on the Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple’s side, she has family in Panama City, Orlando, and Northern Virginia. And since her father immigrated from Italy, she still has aunts, uncles there. In fact, some of his family migrated to Australia. I have one relative abroad, but aunts and uncles in different states. Writing and posting pictures of the baby, allows them to see her growing up.

Now we don’t post everything about her. Luckily, iOS has the shared folders features and since most of the family has iPhones, most of the photos and videos of her end up there. Family gets the most access, obviously

Finally, we always discuss what we will post about her. If its something that we feel can help others, then we will. If it is something that has made us proud of her, we will.

When writing about children, it’s all about being honest. Honest with ourselves, but more importantly being honest with and about her.

Let’s Discuss?

How do you handle writing about your children in blogs or social medai? What guidelines have you set for yourself and others when it comes to discussing your children online?
