Eating: Smitty’s Seafood

Kurt HargisFebruary 13, 2013February 7, 2020 104 Views

Boiled seafood must sound like the most boring bland food in the world to an outsider. Yet, we all know in Louisiana our boiled seafood is everything but boring or bland. Boiled seafood is more than a meal; it’s a celebration. We were celebrating the fact that Cristina’s mom and…

Drinking: Local Brews

Kurt HargisFebruary 11, 2013February 7, 2020 68 Views

Being an ex-smoker, I don’t drink a lot of beer. Some people prefer coffee with their cigarettes; I always preferred beer. And the cheaper the beer usually the more I crave a cigarette. It’s truly the only time I crave one. So I rarely drink. Yet, I do enjoy a…

Drinking: A Tea Education

Kurt HargisFebruary 4, 2013February 7, 2020 66 Views

Coca-Cola and I have come to a point in our relationship that is no longer beneficial to me. I must leave it behind. Water is a fine replacement, but where do I go when I want a pick me up drink? I do not really care for coffee, except expensive…

Eating: La Magazine’s Roast Beef Poboy

Kurt HargisJanuary 31, 2013February 7, 2020 62 Views

From the outside, La Magazine looked like the last place on earth to serve a great roast beef poboy. Well, looks are deceiving. La Magazine made a great roast beef poboy one that would stand up to most poboy shops around New Orleans. This poboy was the first poboy that…

Cooking: Challah French Toast

Kurt HargisJanuary 29, 2013February 7, 2020 61 Views

Challah Bread is a egg bread that is a Jewish bread made for the Sabbath. At least, Wikipedia says so. My wife is not Jewish, and she loves Challah bread any day of the week. Now, I haven’t gotten to working with yeast breads…yet. We buy ours at the supermarket.…

Cooking: Butter Cookies

Kurt HargisJanuary 28, 2013February 7, 2020 59 Views

Michael Pollan, author of the Food Rules, once stated that you should eat anything you cannot be bothered with cooking from scratch. ; His point is that most bad for you foods have quite a bit of hassle in cooking them, so most people will not want to go through…

Cooking: Baked Chicken and Maple Glazed Carrots

Kurt HargisJanuary 24, 2013February 7, 2020 68 Views

Baked chicken is easy.  Baked chicken legs is cheap and easy.  Now, that you have stopped snickering.  Let’s get on with the post. Even though you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you how I bake chicken legs. I take two tablespoons of smoked paprika.  Don’t settle for the paprika…

Cooking: My Five Favorite Food Apps

Kurt HargisJanuary 23, 2013February 7, 2020 70 Views

Recently, Cristina and I jumped back on the fitness band wagon. We did well until the half-marathon and slowly succumbed back to our old ways. It’s not the food we write about on here that got us out of shape; it’s the food we don’t write about that hurt us.…

Eating: Noah’s Drive-In

Kurt HargisJanuary 21, 2013February 7, 2020 89 Views

One of my favorite hamburger places posted this quote by Calvin Trillin on Facebook: “Anyboy who doesn’t think that the best hamburger place in the world is in his home town is a sissy.” Mr. Trillin is right. The best hamburger I ever had was from Noah’s Drive-In in Lockport.…

Welcome to NolaNerdCouple.com!

Hey there! We're a family living just outside of New Orleans, sharing our adventures in fandom, family life, and everything in between.

What started as a food and travel blog (CookTravelEat.com) evolved into this nerdy wonderland when we couldn't stop sharing our passion for pop culture, gaming, and conventions. While we still love sharing our culinary quests and travel tales, we've embraced our true form as nerds with a love for sharing our adventures.

What's New in 2025?

We're switching things up! Instead of focused single-topic posts, we're moving to a weekly newsletter format where we can share all our adventures, thoughts, and experiences in one place. Since this blog is our passion project alongside our teaching careers, this format lets us better balance sharing our stories while keeping up with life. Don't worry - we'll still do occasional deep-dive posts when something extra special comes along!

What you'll find here:

  • Weekly dispatches about our nerdy adventures
  • Convention chronicles
  • New Orleans explorations
  • Family travel tales
  • Fandom discussions
  • Food discoveries
