ComicCon-ing: MegaCon Attempts and Succeeds at Taking All Our Money!

But first…The cast of the classic Sailor Moon will headline the anime programming at Megacon! That’s right Linda Ballantyne, Susan Roman, Katie Griffin and Jill Frappier will in Orlando for the con.

In other news, MegaCon knows how to take all our money.  Just last week we were talking about how we would love to meet the voice actors of some of our favorite Disney films.  I swear MegaCon has tapped our phones. The somehow heard us and announced that Paige O’Hara (Belle), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Linda Larkin (Jasmine), and Christopher Daniel Barnes (Prince Eric) will be appearing in Orlando for Memorial Day weekend.

I guess I know what I’m getting Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple for our anniversary since it’s on last day for the con. Shhh! Don’t tell her.

MegaCon, which takes place on Memorial Day Weekend in Orlando, keeps turning into a top-notch convention. Here are the latest additions.

  • Alice Cooper:  The rock star who brought a new level of theatricality to live performances will be at MegaCon.
  • Jason Aaron:  If you read this blog often, you will notice that we are huge Star Wars fans.  At our local comic shop, we pull all Star Wars Comics.  The writer for the main title, Mr. Aaron, will be there.  He also presently writes for Thor.
  • Nolan North, Troy Baker, and Jennifer Hale:  These veteran voice actors will be at MegaCon.  Nolan North and Troy Baker are part of my favorite game series of all time, Uncharted.

They have also added some more comic creators such as:

  • Mike Zeck
  • Cat Staggs
  • Eddy Barrows
  • Zim Zub
  • Sanford Greene
  • Katie Cook
  • Mike Perkins
  • Georges Jeanty
  • Nick Bradshaw
  • Ant Lucia
  • Aaron Lopresti
  • Tony Harris
  • Giselle Lagace
  • Matt ‘Batt” Banning
  • Mike McKone

We can’t wait to see you there. You will be able to recognize us because we will be the happy couple celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary!

ComicCon-ing: Knocked Out By MegaCon’s Latest Guest Announcement

Let’s face it, we follow comic con news closely.  There are very few announcements that totally surprise us. Even when Wizard World announced Tom Hiddleston at Philadelphia, we were shocked but not truly surprised.  He is part of the biggest comic book movie franchise, and plenty of his costars have done cons. We know he rarely does them, but we knew there would be a chance.

Then Megacon announced someone we never knew we wanted an autograph from but actually always did:

Mike Tyson!

Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple never saw him box, but I did.  And he was scary good.  However, we both attempted to box him, like most nerds of a certain age.  That’s right we both owned Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out.  This was one of our favorite games.  We looked through all of our old NES games and couldn’t find it.  We might look at some local shops, but if we can’t find it, we will get a picture from the game for him to sign.

We can’t wait!

The Nola Nerd Couple Podcast Episode 9: Star Wars, Comic Conventions, Zelda, and Hogs for the Cause

The Nola Nerd Couple is back with another episode covering quite a few topics.  First, we discuss the newest guests added to Celebration, and Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple tells the story of how excited the Mr. was to hear that Sarah Michelle Gellar was going to be there.  We then talk about rebels and how our jobs as teachers really make us like Ezra Bridger, a character that’s hard to like.  We go through the latest guest announcements to Comicpalooza and MegaCon.  Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple gives her first impressions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  Finally, we didn’t think we would be able to go to our favorite festival in New Orleans, Hogs for the Cause, but with a stroke of luck, we will be able to go with VIP tickets!

ComicCon-ing: MegaCon Updates

MegaCon hurt our pocketbooks with some announcements last week for its celebrity guest line-ups.

  • Jenna Coleman, who we have met in London and New Orleans, will be signing.  We haven’t had a chance to watch Victoria, yet, but I we will (which will lead to another autograph.)
  • Arthur Darvill will charge us for at least two autographs, maybe three.  We have a poster that we want the Doctors and Companions to sign, and by all rights in our heads, is Rory qualified to be a companion.  (Jenna has already signed it!). We also are thinking about getting him to sign a centurion photo. Plus, we are working on an Arrowverse poster and he is a large reason why we watch Legends of Tomorrow.
  • Speaking of Legends, the other captain of the Waverider, Caity Lotz will also be in Orlando for the con.  Being such a large part of the Arrowverse, we will get her on our poster as well.

ComicCon-ing: Comicpalooza and MegaCon Updates

So last week, I highlighted the fact that Rodger Bumpass and Bill Fagerbakke of SpongeBob SquarePants would be attending ComicPalooza.  Of course, after I posted that blog, they announce that Tom Kenny, SpongeBob himself, will be attending as well. We are looking at ordering a large poster and having the three of them sign it.

Comicpalooza has an impressive comic creator lineup.  Here is who they have announced so far:

  • Chad Hardin
  • Peter Gross
  • Tyler Jenkins
  • Ben Templesmith
  • Brent Peeples
  • Steve Leialoha
  • Kevin Macguire
  • Philip Sevy
  • Kaare Andrews
  • Gene Ha
  • Kurtis Wibe
  • J.M. Demaateis
  • Andy Schmidt
  • Zack Kaplan
  • Donny Cates

Out of those artists, we are really excited to meet quite a few.  Chad Hardin does the penciling for Harley Quinn, one of Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple’s favorites, and I’ve loved everything by Donny Cates that I’ve read. We always research all creators before a con and try to read at least one thing by them using Marvel Unlimited, Hoopla, and Comixology. We highly recommend you do the same, especially since there is a good chance one of these creators has done some work in your favorite fandom.

They will also have some comic publishers there as well. Zenescope Entertainment publishes the Grimm Fairy Tales line of comics.  Top Cow issues Lara Croft Tomb Raider, The Darkness, Wanted, and Cyberforce.   Skybound Entertainment publishes wildly popular comics such as Invincible, Outcast, and The Walking Dead.  Valiant Entertainment is a publisher that produces a lot of character driven content such as X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, and, one of my favorite comics, Archer & Armstrong.

Comicpalloza always remembers the first part of their name, and we applaud them for that.  I can’t wait to see who else they add!

Man, MegaCon was busy announcing guests last week.  So let’s cut to the chase:

  • John Schneider, Catherine Bach, and Tom Wopat:  After Henry Winkler, these guys were my childhood heroes and, in Ms. Bach’s case, my crush. I’m the least “country person I know, but man I loved the Dukes of Hazard as a kid. Fanboy-ing will happen when I see them.
  • Danielle Panabaker:  I love the cast of The Flash, and I really enjoy Caitlin Snow on the show, especially know that she is allowed to be bad when she becomes Killer Frost.
  • Charlie Cox:  Mrs. Nola Nerd Couple will probably buy two autographs from him.  One, of course from Daredevil/The Defenders, and the other from Stardust, one of her favorite movies.
  • Gaten Matarazzo & Caleb McLaughlin:  The Stranger Things star will be in Orlando for the Memorial Day Weekend.

The Nola Nerd Couple Podcast Episode 7: Spring Comic Cons Preview

The Nola Nerd Couple love attending comic cons and have four scheduled until the end of May. In this podcast, we preview Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Spooky Empire also in Orlando, Comicpalooza in Houston, and then we head back down to Orlando for Mega Con. We do a preview of all the great guests at each con and discuss what we are looking forward to doing at each one.
